Ruth studied Modern and African dance at the Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop, in Davis, California, USA, from the age of fourteen to twenty-one. She has experience in other dance forms as well, including; jazz, ballet and afro-brazillian. Ruth began studying Orissi dance at the Evergreen State College in fall of 2003 under the guidance of faculty and dance Guru Ratna Roy. In 2004 Ruth joined the Evergreen Orissi Dance Ensemble. She continued her training in Odissi dance at the Evergreen State College and Urvasi Dance Acadamy, joining Urvasi Dance in 2005. She has performed throughout Washington State, including Folklife Festival 2004 and 2005, Cultural Crossroads 2004 and 2005, Kashmiri Relief Benefit Concert in 2005, and other concerts in the Puget Sound area. In February, 2006, she performed at the Konark Dance and Music Festival, as a member of Urvasi. Ruth recently spent time in India (January through May, '06), where she trained under the guidance of Orissa Dance Academy teachers Smt. Aruna Mohanty and Madhusmita Mohanty. While in Orissa Ruth also studied Odissi mardala with Guru Banamali Maharana, and Hindustani violin with Ramesh Chandra Das. |
