Silver Jewelry of Orissa
While all profit from sales on this Odissi Dance website go to support the preservation of the mahari syle of Orissi, current proceeds from silver jewelry sales will be dedicated exclusively to help support the two remaining devadasis (Sashimani and Parasumani maharis) from the Jagannatha temple in Puri, Orissa. To stress the importance of this: The Puri maharis have no income, and there is no organization, including Government of India, looking after their welfare. They live exclusively at the, often whimsical, charity of other people. The last two times we saw Sashimani Mahari she has not been well. Whenever we visited we brought her food and some temporary assistance, as we used to do for Dungri Mahari. We are deeply concerned for Sashimani Mahari's health and are trying to help (see News for update 02-28-06). Anything you can do to help will be appreciated. Thank you for caring. |
