Who Is John Gerecht?
I started taking photos at Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconson in 1969.I was a junior at the time and a friend of mine gave me some film to play with. I had a great time and he then taught me that you
could develop it yourself and even make prints. It was a revelation. My parents gave me an enlarger for Christmas that year and I've going strong ever since.
I've never lost the wonder seeing a blank piece of paper turn into picture while I'm watching. It's simply astonishing when that
happens. I suppose that if I ever lose that sense of wonder, I'll quit.I've worked with color also, but never had as much fun as basic Black &White. For the last couple of years, I've had a new experience
working with PhotoShop. This is something completely new and different. It gives me exactly the sense of wonder that
I've gotten from Black &White over the years, A sense of wonder as the picture appears in front of me. But now, it's on a screen instead of on a piece of paper submerged in a tray of photo chemicals. WOW! This is GREAT!!
No more developer and fixer!! Well, not exactly, because I still really prefer Black & White, so I still need to process the pictures to get them ready for the computer. All this said, I'm NOT a professional photographer. I'm a happy amateur. My specialty is sensuous, beautiful women. I make no apologies for this and I enjoy my hobby. I don't refuse money if
people feel the need to pay me, but most of my models don't ever seem to have any money, so I just do it for fun most of the time. Many of my models have illusions that they are going to be
models, but in reality they just end up with some really good photos. Several of my models have become successful models, but the vast majority just don't have what it takes, which is more than
just beauty (another web page for the future, perhaps?). |
