Jamie and Claire
Jamie and Claire are the lead characters in the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. In most book stores you will probably find the series in the Romance section but to those of us who live and breathe these characters and hang on their every word, we know they are much more than mere Romance novels. Jamie and Claire are as real to me as my own family. I worry about them. I share in their joys and sorrows. I know that sounds insane to most people but for others who are as outlandishly obsessed as I am will completely understand.
Currently the series stands at five books
with 2 more planned.
Read them in order if you want the maximum obsession
value.
Outlander
Dragonfly in Amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
Anyway, many times when I'm listening to music I can hear the song in the soundtrack of Jamie and Claire's life. Here are some of the songs that make me think of them.
Claire crossed over to a new life and a new love but the
memories
of what she left behind were a constant companion.
Evening Falls
by Enya
When the evening falls and
the daylight is fading,
from within me calls - could it be I am sleeping?
For a moment I stray, then it holds me completely.
close to home - I cannot say.
close to home feeling so far away.
As I walk the room there before me a shadow
from another world, where no other can follow.
carry me to my own, to where I can cross over...
close to home - I cannot say.
close to home feeling so far away.
Forever searching; never right,
I am lost in oceans of night.
Forever hoping I can find memories.
those memories I left behind.
Even though I leave will I go on believing
that this time is real - am I lost in this feeling?
like a child passing through, never knowing the reason.
I am home - I know the way.
I am home - feeling oh, so far away.
This song was the first one played at our wedding reception
in 1996.
Even though it was "our" song first, it fits Jamie and Claire well too.
Faithfully
by Peter Cetera (from the album "One
Clear Voice")
Some say it's just the nature of the
beast
When you love somebody so
passionately
Time has a way of stealing
That raging fire you're feeling
Leaving the ashes laying at your feet
Those fools of little faith will
never know
Those higher places two hearts can go
Where time is standing still
And love will burn until
The heaven and the earth have come
and gone
This fire inside for you
Is constant as the morning star
And you will be
Forever in my heart
As long as there's a river
Searching for an endless sea
I will always love you - Faithfully
Tonight we'll raise a glass to lovers
Across the ages
We'll hold each other and toast to
the day
When history's said and done
And we'll still stand as one
Something's were never meant to fade
away
This fire inside for you
Is constant as the morning star
And you will be
Forever in my heart
As long as there's a river
Searching for an endless sea
I will always love you
– Faithfully
Claire gave her all to save Jamie at the end of Outlander.
Whatever it took, she was going to bring him back from the edge...
If That's What It Takes by Celine Dion
You're the bravest of hearts, you're the strongest of souls
You're my light in the dark, you're the place I call home
You can say it's all right, but I know that you're breaking up inside
I see it in your eyes
Even you face the night afraid and alone
That's why I'll be there
When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend
Ev'ry beat of my heart, ev'ry day without end
Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes
If that's what it takes
You can sleep in my arms, you don't have to explain
When your heart's crying out, baby, whisper my name
'Cause I've reached out for you when the thunder is crashing up above
You've given me your love
When your smile like the sun that shines through the pain
That's why I'll be there
When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend
Ev'ry beat of my heart, ev'ry day without end
I will stand like a rock, I will bend till I break
Till there's no more to give, if that's what it takes
I will risk everything, I will fight, I will bleed
I will lay down my life, if that's what you need
Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes
Through the wind and the rain, through the smoke and the fire
When the fear rises up, when the wave's ever higher
I will lay down my heart, my body, my soul
I will hold on all night and never let go
Ev'ry second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes
If that's what it takes
Every day
If that's what it takes
Jamie said he often imagined he saw Claire in his dreams
during their long years apart.
I like to think he held out hope that someday, out of the blue, she
really would come back to him... and she did. :)
Someday Out of the Blue
by Elton John
Some day out of the blue
In a crowded street or a deserted square
I'll turn and I'll see you
As if our love were new
Some day we can start again, some day soon
Here comes the night
Here come the memories
Lost in your arms
Down in the foreign fields
Not so long ago
Seems like eternity
Those sweet afternoons
Still capture me
I still believe
I still put faith in us
We had it all and watched it slip away
Where are we now
Not where we want to be
Those hot afternoons
Still follow me
Some day out of the blue
Maybe years from now
Or tomorrow night
I'll turn and I'll see you
As if we always knew
Some day we would live again, some day soon
I still believe
I still put faith in us
This song always makes me think of those 20 years Claire
and Jamie spent apart
and the anguish they must have felt believing they would never see one
another again.
Sand and Water
by Beth Nielsen Chapman
All alone I didn't like the feeling
All alone I sat and cried
All alone I had to find some meaning
In the center of the pain I felt inside
All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water, and a million years gone by
I will see you in the light of a thousand
suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when I come, as we all will come
Through the doors beyond the grave
All alone I heal this heart of sorrow
All alone I raise this child
Flesh and bone, he's (she's) just
Bursting towards tomorrow
And his (her) laughter fills my world and wears your smile
All alone I came into this world
All alone I will someday die
Solid stone is just sand and water, baby
Sand and water and a million years gone by
There are more songs that make me think of
Jamie and Claire but these are the most special to me.
Read these books. You'll never be the same and you'll never regret the
ride.
